We’ve got trouble right here in River City!
Trouble with a capital T!
And that rhymes with P!
And that stands for PICNIC!
But there is, fortunately, lots of shade in picturesque Lincoln Park in Alameda, where we shall be holding PEERS’ annual Free Picnic in the Park dance. Please join us as we re-create a turn-of-the-century picnic dance inspired by the Ice Cream Sociable in The Music Man.
Our guests are invited to bring their own period-style picnic lunch and to make their picnic site look as period as possible (Please note the event is NOT a potluck. As the citizens of River City say, “You can eat your fill of all the food you bring yourself!” Our hard-working catering staff will be taking a well-deserved holiday!).
Suggested costume for the event is late Victorian, Edwardian, or ‘Teens summer afternoon dress (circa 1890 to 1914), but, as usual, costumes are admired, not required. The year is technically 1912, but River City is a very old-fashioned community where not everyone wears the latest fashions! To protect your complexion, however, we highly recommend hats or bonnets, parasols, and sunscreen, and you may even want to bring a shawl to protect you against the changeable climate of beautiful Alameda, whose summer afternoons tend to be considerably cooler than River City, Iowa’s. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes suitable for an outdoor dance. Please leave your fancy shoes at home.
After the luncheon, the always elegant Bangers & Mash will play an afternoon of late Victorian, Edwardian, and ‘Teens ballroom dance music, set dances, and mixers for your dancing pleasure, ranging from waltzes, polkas, and schottisches to the latest Ragtime one-steps and two-steps to the newly imported Tango from Argentina. As usual, the set dances and the “new” dances will be briefly taught or called
PEERS is delighted to announce our guest performers, the wonderfully harmonious Time B Four Barbershop Quartet, who will perform songs of the Gay 90’s and early 20th century.
This annual event is a thank you to all of our devoted fans, and we will not be charging a fee for admission. Donations for our brilliant and hard-working musicians will be gratefully accepted, however, both before and during the event. To make an advance donation, simply send a check to PEERS at 2144 B Buena Vista Avenue, Alameda, CA or go to the ball website at www.peers.org/rivercity.html and click on the PayPal icon for instructions.
If you have any questions or need further information, please call (510) 522-1731 or email peers@peers.org. Hope to see you there!
