Forgive my spelling; I went last year for the first time in Alameda... can anyone let me know if it is happening this year and when? It was my first time at such an event and I loved it. Also, if there are any more regular costumed/themed events on a more regular (if less grand) scale that are open to newbies I would appreciate info on those as well. Getting sick of the clubs but need to continue dressing up and dancing!

Hi, Anna. It's nice to hear from you. Yes, Le Bal des Vampires will be held again this year on Saturday, November 7. In fact, it's an annual event! I'll be posting a write-up of the ball shortly but here's a link to the ball website: www.peers.org/vamp09.html

PEERS gives a formal ball on the first Saturday of almost every month and they are definitely open to newbies. For a list of our scheduled events (with descriptions), please see www.peers.org/events.html or simply check out our home page at www.peers.org Events almost always begin with a dance lesson and special dances are taught throughout the evening.

In late November and December, most of the PEERS crowd takes a break to work at the annual Dickens Christmas Fair, which I think you'll enjoy. We have an all-day costumed dance party and lots of other entertainment. Check out the Fair's website at www.dickensfair.com

Other costumed dance organizations include the Gaskell Occasional Ball Society -www.gaskellball.com/ - and the Bay Area English Regency Society (BAERS) -www.baers.org/

And I really must mention Friday Night Waltz - www.fridaynightwaltz.com/ - and the new East Bay Waltz - www.eastbaywaltz.com/ Both produce mostly informal dances (though FNW has some grand costume events) but have the added advantage of beginning the evening with 2-hour dance classes (for both beginners and experienced dancers).

Have fun and please feel free to email me at peers@peers.org if you have any questions.

Wow! Great info... I am noting it all, and will be at an event soon. I will introduce myself and thank you in person.

If you end up going to PEERS regularly, and if you want, you can work the door for a shift -- 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the event and amount of volunteers. It's a lot of fun (except at BdV, when it's a ton of work, but it's still fun).

"Work the door"? Could you please explain what that entails?

Greg Chow is in charge of the door/reception area but I'll at least chime in to say that working door (or gate) usually involves taking tickets for an hour shift (in exchange for free admission). It's a fun but challenging job since you need good customer service skills. For Le Bal des Vampires, you're dealing with a huge crowd but at least the guests have already bought their tickets. For the other balls, "door" or "gate" duty involves selling tickets as well as taking them but the crowds aren't as overwhelming.

Ah, good idea. I'm not sure if I should direct this to you or Lady Jane. I would like to volunteer for a shift at the October 3rd Sweeney Todd Ball. It will be a good way to meet people and I will be in costume. Please let me know the specifics of what I will need to do. Thank you.

Anna, please email me at peers at peers dot org and I'll give you Greg Chow's email address and introduce you virtually! Each shift at the gate is an hour (you'll get your schedule a few days before the ball) and you will always be paired (or tripled up) with a veteran gate person or persons.
