Re: Music Man August 1, 2009
Mon, July 27, 2009 - 11:33 PMAlas, we'd love to have ice cream at the picnic but don't have the resources to serve it ourselves and don't have a licence to sell it. We had hoped to have one of our favorite ice cream vendors at the event but since we haven't heard back from them, we assume they're not interested in attending.

Wed, April 1, 2009 - 9:44 AMKim,
The Edwardian era is a different time span for USA (1900-1918) then for England (1901-1915); it all has to do with the death of Queen Victoria and their first involvement with WWI. -

Re: Music Man August 1, 2009
Sat, July 25, 2009 - 3:35 PMTo other interesting parties,
To continue the Edwardian feel of the day, there will be a theater performance in Mountain View called, 'Floradora,' that many are going to see that evening after the picnic. This is a show based on the first Broadway show featuring a line-up of female acts, this show predates the Ziegfield Follies; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florodora. At age sixeen, Evelyn Nesbit (famous Charles Dana Gibson girl) was a Spanish dancer in the show which of course led to her fandom and that scandal with Stanford White in his tower at Madison Square Garden on his red velvet swing. A few years later Evelyn's then crazy millionaire husband Harry K. Thaw would kill Stanford White in protecting her honor; he would later be the first man in America to plea insanity and be spared the death penalty;1906. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evelyn_Nesbit

Re: Music Man August 1, 2009
Sun, July 26, 2009 - 2:22 PMOh yeah, so far I haven't learned to play my cornet very well using The Think Method ... :)
As for watching movie versions of "The Music Man", there was a 2003 remake starring Matthew Broderick as Professor Harold Hill, though I would much more strongly recommend the original version with Robert Preston (as well as a lovely young Shirley Jones and an even younger Ron Howard).
I might be able to attend the PEERS picnic, though that may depend on being able to find one of those straw hats. Does anyone know if the Hat Guys store in Oakland sells that kind of period hat for men? Would a traditional straw hat that passes at a Music Man picnic also work for Gatsby?
I doubt that I'll be able to attend, but thanks for mentioning "Floradora". I saw a wonderful production of "Iolanthe" put on by the same Lyric Theatre a few years ago.

Re: Music Man August 1, 2009
Mon, July 27, 2009 - 11:36 PMIt would be such fun to see "Floradora." It's one of those smash hit early musicals that almost none of us have seen because it's never revived. Thanks for the information, Jeff!

Re: Music Man August 1, 2009
Wed, July 29, 2009 - 6:56 PMIn the category of historical "E. Nesbit" persons, I think Edith is much more interesting, and a better writer than Evelyn.
